Guide to PID Tuning for Klipper 3D Printer

PID tuning is a crucial step in optimizing the performance of your 3D printer, as it helps stabilize temperature fluctuations in the hotend and heated bed. Klipper firmware offers a straightforward method for PID tuning. Follow this step-by-step guide to achieve optimal PID values for your 3D printer.

Pre-requisites:

  1. Access to Klipper Configuration Files:
  • Make sure you have access to the Klipper configuration files for your printer. This is typically a printer.cfg file.
  1. SSH or Terminal Access:
  • You will need access to the Raspberry Pi or the device running Klipper via SSH or a direct terminal connection.

Steps to PID Tuning:

1. Connect to Klipper:

  • Access the Klipper system through SSH or a direct terminal connection.

2. Heat the Hotend:

  • Issue a command to heat the hotend to the desired temperature. For example:
    PRINT START GCODE SET_TEMPERATURE BED=60 SET_TEMPERATURE EXTRUDER=200

3. Run Auto PID Tuning:

  • Issue the following command to start the automatic PID tuning process: PID_CALIBRATE HEATER=extruder TARGET=200

With tons of new advances in the 3D printing technology sector, along with that comes new software and hardware! We have just this week decided to download the new Orca Slicer which is another fork of the Silc3r/Prusaslicer code; but damn it is so much more refined and updated. I have been using it on both Voron 2.4s, and the RatRig V-Cores! I will be glad to share all profiles with the users on our forums.

One of the best highlights of the Orca Slicer for our own usage was the access to the mainsail tab right from inside of the slicer! Super convenient to not be tabbing through all of the printers, or selecting them from the dropdown in the browser.

Orca Slicer comes with default profiles for both the Voron 2.4, and the RatRig machines that we run here at Print3D; and it was much faster than superslicer’s ETA on most of our large prints. I did notice the speeds are much higher than what your stock profile usually carries, but the accelerations were a bit lower than our settings. I opted to increase the accel and tune the flow rate on this new slicer. Tons of calibration options are built-in as well, and give you most all features of Superslicer but with things like the Arachne wall-line code upgraded and not out-of-date beta versions.

It’s time to finally review the FYSETC Voron 2.4 R1 kit that we received several weeks ago, and had the pleasure to build. This was our first voron so there was several learning curves coming from the RatRig V-Core builds that we had become accustomed to. The voron kit was complete, and I found it to be quite decent quality, and they shipped it in two boxes which arrived within 7 days. Quite impressive for a chinese company and during the chinese new year even at that!

Shipping & Packaging

The shipment was quite impressive as once we paid, it was marked shipped within 24 hours. We had tracking numbers within 48 hours, and the boxes arrived via FedEx within 7 days to our US east-coast address. The interior of the packages was very impressive with foam cut-outs and packaging for each and every item. I unboxed the items, downloaded the BOM and was able to verify everything was accounted for within minutes. You can locate the BOM on their GitHub page in the resources above.

Part Quality

We are going to go over part quality next, because it’s the main reason people decide to build Voron machines. They are ready to upgrade from the traditional v-slot wheels and wobbly lead-screws and looking for more speed and part quality. FYSETC quality is on par with any american printer I have seen so far, and I would even venture to say with regards to the mechanical aspects of the printer it’s on par with RatRig all the way. The only except to quality vs RatRig kit is the motors, I am a big fan of LDO motors and they are just more robust and hold up in my opinion. The FYSETC motors have given me no issues yet, but are not rated to hold the current that the LDO motors are. I plan to increase current and heat-sink the stepper motors once I start ramping up the speed. Overall quality is definitely an A grade, not your average chinesium bullshit. I will say that the amount of parts they included will surprise you as well, I had parts to build modifications I had planned such as klicky probe and more which was awesome! My kit even had the raspberry pi 3B in it, which I cannot find anywhere much less in a kit.

Build Time & Instructions

There are SO many 2.4 Voron build instructions on the internet I am not planning to break down my entire build, but I will say even with my experience I spread my build out over a weeks time. The main thing is to ensure your frame is square, and you take your time with the electronics to set them up how you want. Clean and neat is the goal, to ensure future mods are easy to do. The FYSETC R1 kit does not come with an afterburner PCB so I am still using the cable chains, but the kit was awesome and everything fit perfectly into the chains; so you can NOT complain! Oh and I chose to use a single X axis linear rail, and have had no issues whatsoever.

Price vs Value

With all the different kits available on the internet, I would say the FYSETC kit stood out to me for the price vs value the most. The sale i purchased had my entire kit for 750$ shipped, and I got the Pi3B, and a CNC kit with the whole VORON setup for that price. You can NOT build a CoreXY with those parts cheaper anywhere else, and FYSETC has this market figured out. Is the Price vs Value worth it? HELL YES!

Overview

The FYSETC Voron 2.4 R1 kit is the best bang for the buck Voron 2.4 you are going to find on the internet, hands down. I have the thing up and printing within a week and it looks amazing. Now I have to mention that the firmware needed some work, so we took it upon ourselves to make some sensorless homing firmware and are maintaining that firmware within the Print3D GitHub repo! Go buy a Voron kit from FYSETC and don’t forget to use our firmware today.

We are proud to release our new firmware for the Spider v2.2 board in our Voron 2.4 R1 kit offered by FYSETC. Our build review will be released within the next week, and will contain a real outlook into the build quality and build process. The Voron configuration and firmware offered online for these kits does not usually make sensorless homing simple, and revolve around endstops and klicky probe. We decided to keep this first voron close to our RatRig configuration to streamline our print farm, and our RatRig’s always have a probe and sensorless right out of the box.

If you have questions or issues with our firmware, do not hesitate to sign-up on the forums and ask for help. We will have FYSETC taking part in the forums and listening to your feedback as well. I hope to continue growing our community not only with the RatRig, but Voron members as well!

UPDATED as of 3/24/2023

  • Klicky Probe as Z Endstop, Bed Mesh Probe, and QGL probe
  • Disabled purge bucket temporary (to get Klicky working was quite a headache)
  • Basic G-Code and Macro changes to convert from RatRig to Voron
